Regarding Condoleezza I'm glad to see Dr. Rice get the Secretary of State gig. The only thing better would have been for her to get the VP job. Do you remember reading the election rumors that Cheney was going to use his heart condition as an excuse to step down and let the President to put someone more poll-positive in the slot? Did a similar scenario go through your head this weekend when he checked himself into a hospital? I was wondering if Cheney was about to follow Ashcroft out the door perhaps with Rumsfeldt following him. Good to see Ashcroft go, by the way. It will be real interesting to see what the new guy is like. I get the impression that he and Bush are best friends but that no one really knows what he's like judicially. I had sort of wondered if Bush might nominate him for the US Supreme Court since he had briefly been on the Texas Sumpreme Court before Bush hired him away. I hope Condi does well as the Secretary of State. She is certainly a popular political figure in the (my?) blogosphere. Hmmm. How do you measure a Secretary of State? Henry Kissinger and Thomas Jefferson are the first two that pop in my head if you asked me to name famous ones, but I couldn't tell you whether or not Kissinger was a good Secretary. I always think of him in the context of confidant of the President. Here is a list of the historical Secretaries of State from Jefferson to Powell. There are a lot of names that you will recognize there, but not too many that you recognize because they were Secretary of State. |
