This story from Fox laments the lack of knowledge Americans, particularly young Americans, have about personal finance. I think my favorite part of the story is the fact that they reference The Onion. (Kids: this is one reference that should always find a way into your bibliography.) I can certainly attest to the general lack of knowledge of personal finance. Having worked for both my company's 401(k) department and online trading arm, I have spoken with a hundreds of folks who have no idea what a mutual fund even is. If you're young or new to the concept of taking responsibility for your own finances, I recommend Get A Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties by Beth Kobliner. (I just found out that she has her own website too. (Of course that's no surprise nowadays.)) |
